Sonic the Comic has reached its fifteen anniversary - as well as Sonic the Comic Online's 5th and Nigel Kitching's birthday! To celebrate, Sonic the Comic Online has released a special with multiple posters, a new strip and randomly-loading variant covers.
Meanwhile, grand old Humes Nigel Kitching, Richard Elson, Nigel Dobbyn and Mick McMahon are currently involved in the independent title Bulletproof. Elson's art also appears in this week's Judge Dredd strip in 2000AD (and regularly in 2000AD), while Lew Stringer continues working for Viz, Toxic! and Image's Elephantmen. Former script Hume Mark Millar and editor Andy Diggle... well, you can those ones out for yourself, boomers!

Sonic Unleashed - Cosmic 4/6/08
It's confirmed by Sega Europe, Sonic will be returning to all the Next-Gen consoles (and PlayStation 2) with a new game.
Titled Sonic Unleashed, the released (and previously leaked) screenshots and video show promise, similar to the teasers for the ill-fated Sonic The Hedgehog (also known as Sonic Next-Gen), you get a familiar feel of Sonics' recent Nintendo DS games, which have been quite successful, as the game is often viewed side on, a sort of 2D view of 3D, and demonstrates a full on running session through the majority of the level shown. At times the view switches to behind Sonic, and you continue to guide him, this view of the action reminiscent of Sonic Wildfire on the Nintendo Wii.Click here to read more. |

Sonic RPG revealed in Nintendo Power magazine! - The Tingler 1/12/08
Nintendo Power magazine has a big cover feature on Bioware's eagerly awaited Sonic RPG for the Nintendo DS, which is now titled Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. There are 11 playable characters, with Sonic, Tails, Amy, Knuckles, Rouge, Shadow and Big the Cat being the ones already known. Eggman/Robotnik will be in it, but not as the main villain (supposedly).
Bioware, if you don't already know, are the talented creators of Baldur's Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect amongst others, and are well known for never having made a game that was less than a classic - Sonic's in very capable hands with them.

M. Sakurai:Well... That's a tough question, I'll tell you that Sonic's already in the game, but we're still waiting for a last confirmation from SEGA. Due to the proximity of the game's release, SEGA's deadline to submit their confirmation is the 26th this month, and in that date the official site will be updated about the inclusion o not of SEGA's mascot in the game. Mario & Sonic Olympics Interviews - Vector 3/28/07
Gamedaily's interview with SEGA and Nintendo has slightly more info. The game is being developed by SEGA sports with supervision by Shigeru Miyamoto. They're considering ways to balance Sonic's speed in a race. And to those wondering about whether SEGA has gotten the message in the overall response to STH360, this quote is interesting:
BIZ: The Sonic franchise, especially with the recent games on PS3 and 360, has sort of seen a drop off in quality over the years. The games have not been received all that well and the franchise could use a jumpstart. Do you see this team up with Mario as a way of reinvigorating Sonic or refreshing the brand?
SJ: I think that's a very fair question. The Sonic games of late... the better games have been on the Nintendo platforms. Sonic Rush on the DS last year was a really good game. Sonic and the Secret Rings on the Wii is a great game as well. It's selling really strongly and is definitely one of the Wii platform favorites at the moment. So it feels like Sonic and the Sonic games have an affinity for the Nintendo platforms anyway, and we're happy to extend that. But you're right in that Sega has been looking to reinvigorate the Sonic franchise and inject some more quality into the games going forward. And we feel this is a great opportunity to work with Nintendo to do that.
Newsweek's interview says that Shigeru Miyamoto will have more involvement in this game than on the average Nintendo title.
Separately, is there a plan to revitalize Sonic on other platforms? Or is this a sign that it just makes more sense in the future to focus Sonic on Nintendo platforms where the product quality has been good and where there may be more audience affinity?
We are actually undergoing a fairly considerable refresh of Sonic as an intellectual property, as a character. Sonic on the Wii is probably the first product that's come to market that reflects that. We're not going to be bringing another game out on the other platforms for quite some time, because we feel that it is time to reinvent Sonic, to make Sonic contemporary again. At the same time, even the recent 360 and Playstation 3 games have sold extremely well. Sonic is still an extremely endearing character; there's still a lot of love for Sonic out there in consumerland.

No More Sonic Hedgehog : ( - The Magical Dreamer 2/19/07
"An international committee of human geneticists recently voted to change the names of a few human genes because the current, sometimes flamboyant names—like Sonic hedgehog—are either offensive or embarrassing. Other genes earmarked for a name change include lunatic fringe, radical fringe, manic fringe, and Indian hedgehog. The vote was conducted by the HUGO Gene Nomenclature Committee, which establishes naming protocols for human genes..."
Wasn't it kind of cool how Sonic had a gene named after him? I mean, a gene in the actual human genome! Well, that's no more. Show's over, folks.

Sonic and the Secret Rings - Full Metal Rayzor 12/27/06
I was on GameFAQS, and someone found what appears to be screenshots of 2 mini-games. One that shows Sonic, Knux, Amy, and what looks like the genie in a fiddle contest, and another that show the characters in front of balloons doing something.
Also, apparently this game has already been rated E, which seems like it got rated awfully fast compared to Shadow, Riders, Rivals, and StH. |
